The ongoing lockdown has led to a battle between the video conferencing apps. Almost all of them are coming up with new features every day to keep up with the competition. Google and WhatsApp have increased the limit for number of participants on a video call. And now, Skype has introduced a new Zoom-like feature to beat the competition.
The video calling app has introduced custom backgrounds – a feature that made Zoom highly popular in the initial days. The new custom backgrounds in Skype is available as a part of the app update for Mac, Windows, Linux and the web.
To recall, Skype used to allow users to blur the background while on a video call. However, there was no option to apply custom backgrounds.
“This could be anywhere: Want to look like you’re calling from the beach, or from space? Now you can, with custom backgrounds for your video calls,” the description from Skype read.
How to apply custom background on Skype calls?
– While in a video call, head over to the video button or click the three-dot more menu.
– Click “Choose background effect.”
– From here you can blur the current background, choose an image you previously added, or add a new one to customize the background effect.
Besides custom background, you also get the ability to share files directly from your Mac to Skype contacts. You even get easy access to call controls in the chat menu. The platform has been making all these changes to retain users and expand its presence amid competition from other platforms like Google Duo, Zoom and WhatsApp, among others.
